JAGGALIGE

The biggest among the skin instrument is jaggalige. As its name suggests it is a biggest version of Halage Generally Jaggaliges are five feet in diameter. The artist playing it rolls it on the ground beats his rythms.

To make Jaggalige the iron ring of the bullock cart wheel is used. Bull on Buffalo skin is treated and tanned and with the thick leather threads the skin is tied to the ring. Most Jaggalige.  Are adorned with colourful pictures. Though Jaggalige is refered to as Ranakahalage there are no evidence. That it was used in the wars about 15 to 20 artists participate in Jaggalige mela. The leader of the mela keeps beating a medium sized khani Halage. Jaggalige artists follow the beats of the leader. Long tunic, Kacche Dhothara, Rumalu middle band for the waist these are the simple costumes of Jaggalige artists. Jaggalige which is as big as a bullock cart wheel is being turned on the ground with left hand and according to different styles they beat it with right hand. If you miss the hold on Jaggalige it will roll off on its own. If it becomes slack the style becomes inolistinct and miss the beat. Hence Jaggalige artist not only should know his music but should be well built to handle it.

The styles of Jaggalige mela’s dance compare with Alaavi Dance styles. A big group of Jaggalige performance can give you heart beatin and hair raising experience. In the mela they dance moving like morally. They go one behind the other, block their way face to face, make a triangular formation and in many other ways they perform. When they reach crescendo four artists lift their leader on a jaggalige. Standing & dancing on Jaggalige. The leader performs various tricks with his khani Halage. Jaggalige is mainly performed in Dharawada.
